What is Hidden Taipei]

See the different Taipei through the eyes of homeless or vulnerably housed people.

Preface]

Homelessness can be found in cities around the world.  They are often people whose skills are not required or needed anymore due to social changes in industrialized societies found in large cities across the globe.  Homelessness is often viewed by many as the result of personal failings, such as laziness, lack of working skills, or simply people who prefer and choose to live freely.  In Taiwan, there are many diverse reasons why people become homeless.  Major factors include work injuries, difficulty in finding a new position when original industries are relocated, and fewer jobs available as more and more foreign labors are imported to Taiwan.  In addition, with the rapid development of new technology, no one can be sure of the exact time when our current jobs will be replaced by advanced robotics or by cheaper labor elsewhere as technology makes our world smaller.  It is important for each of us to think about how to deal with the homeless issue with wisdom.

Objective]

“Hidden Taipei”, an initiative which started in July, 2014, is an alternative walking tour in Taipei city.  Currently, the Tour is a program is part of a non-profit organisation called “Homeless Taiwan” (芒草心協會).  The program aims to train the homeless people to be tour guides so they can provide paid tour services.  Through the “Hidden Taipei” program, not only will it make it possible for these guides to earn a living to look after themselves, it is also hoped that the program can provide deeper insight of the homeless people of Taipei to the general public.

The ultimate goal is for the “Homeless Taiwan” program to one day become a profitable social enterprise, where profits earned can be fed back into the program to provide direct services to the homeless.  Looking towards the future, we hope to provide more job opportunities to the homeless, as well as expanding the products and services to them.  By reducing the dependency on donations and funding, we hope that the “Hidden Taipei” program can grow and develop into a self-sufficient enterprise and focus on long-term objectives in helping the homeless.

Mission]

Independence, Contribution to Society.

Intro.]

What would be the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Taipei? Is it the modern building “Taipei 101”, the 24 hour bookstore “Elite Bookstore Tunnan”, or the National Palace Museum owning countless treasures?  In fact, there are more to discover in Taipei, apart from its brilliance and greatness.

Our tour guides are those who are Homeless or vulnerably-housed people. They have different views of Taipei because of their experiences of surviving on the streets. With the efforts of local organizations and volunteers, they are trained tour guides who can take you to the streets to see hidden parts of the city you might never see before.
