What's popping up in your mind when it comes to Ilha Formosa, "Taiwan"?

Street food?

Dumplings?

Taipei 101?

The last Free China?

Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"?

Or perhaps more than 30 different indigenous peoples and Austronesian languages that have existed in Taiwan for more than 8000 years?

Taiwan has been regarded as where people can see some of the most authentic Chinese cultures in the world, after the Cultural Revolution initiated by the Communist Party of China between 1949 and 1976. However, for many scholars in the world, Taiwan has been a priceless island to study the world's Austronesian cultures: Simply in Taiwan, there are more than 30 different indigenous languages and peoples. In fact, Taiwan has all the ten Austronesian linguistic subgroups in the world -- Actually 9 out of the ten subgroups can only be found in Taiwan! This is why Taiwan has been regarded as the world's treasure of studying Austronesian cultures.

However, to know these indigenous groups and their cultures is important not only for the diversified ethnic cultures, but also for their rights to live in the land as the true native people to Taiwan.

Taiwan has some of the most complete laws to protect the rights of the indigenous peoples in the world; but to legalize the rights is one thing, to truly carry it out is another.

Every year, many indigenous people go on strike to claim their rights to the native land and to accuse that how their rights to preserve their cultures have been deprived.

Economically, the indigenous people are among some of the poorest in the country, as they, especially the elders, don't know how to survive in the modern capitalized society, because what they are accustomed to is to live on what they grow and hunt in their own land, not by trading and making money.

This is why I founded the website Mata Taiwan. 'Mata' is a common term for most of the world's Austronesian people for "eye(s)". I hope the site could be a universal platform for the world's people to see the beauty and the thoughts of Taiwanese indigenous people. Since the summer of 2014, I've even tried to launch some cross-cultural immersion trips to the indigenous communities:

We went to an ilegal quarry built on an indigenous land to see the true problem that the people are confronted with.

We went to some communities with indigenous people whose ethnical identity has not yet been recognized by the country.

We even have travelers working as volunteers to devote in a traditional ceremonial revival to see the common problem of cultural preservation in indigenous communities.

With Mata Taiwan, we hope more and more people in the world to see a real Taiwan, and to participate in the activities to secure their rights to live on this land with dignity.
